Masks, headgear, chin straps and hoses are the sleep apnea devices with which one needs to be comfortable to have a good night’s sleep. The most important is the sleep mask.

Your sleep study is finished and your doctor has determined the right air pressure level for your CPAP treatment. Next comes a most personal step—finding the preferred sleep mask that fits well and is comfortable enough to wear throughout the night. Sleep masks come in a variety of styles and sizes designed to fit the needs and preferences of many different patients. How do you choose a sleep mask that best fits your needs?

Obviously, it’s important to choose a sleep mask that’s comfortable; if not, you may not use it regularly. You may receive guidance from your equipment supplier or care provider. It’s still a good idea to try different types of sleep masks.

If the mask doesn't fit, isn't comfortable, or doesn't meet your breathing needs, your CPAP therapy will be jeopardized. The sleep mask type that best suits you depends greatly on personal needs and preferences. Identify these and then work to match the right sleep mask to your individual profile. Take into consideration your distinctive facial anatomy, amount of facial hair, whether or not you’re claustrophobic, etc. Each mask has its own benefits, and you should discuss (with your doctor or equipment supplier) which one is best for you.

Deciding and choosing which mask is an important activity for sleep apnea treatment. One approach that many CPAP users embrace is keeping two or three different masks that they're comfortable with—allowing for an occasional switch to relieve pressure and irritation on their face.

If your prescription reads for a non-specific mask or patient preference, you can try new models for the duration of the prescription. Most insurance companies will replace masks a few times each year, and accessories like nasal cushions more frequently.
